Lent 2018

Daily Observance of Lent — Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving

Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are three important spiritual disciplines that Jesus taught his followers in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6). They are of great importance for Christian life and disciplines to work on during the forty days of Lent. St Cedd set aside forty days of prayer and fasting when he first came to Lastingham. It was a discipline he’d learnt on Lindisfarne and he wanted to consecrate the site of his new monastery here to God in this way. So it has been part of our Lastingham way from the beginning. Let us be faithful this Lent to our spiritual heritage as we follow in the steps of our forebears Cedd and Chad.

‘JESUS, MAN OF PRAYER’ by Sister Margaret CSMV

There must have been something very special about our Lord’s prayer life, that his disciples asked, ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’ This book meets the needs of those who are hungry for God, wish to increase their understanding and deepen their prayer life. Sister Margaret Magdalen is an Anglican nun who was brought up in an evangelical tradition and, after taking vows, worked in Botswana, eventually coming back to St Mary’s Convent, Wantage. We shall be reading her book at home, and  then on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am, meeting in the St Cedd Centre, Lastingham, to talk and pray about what we have read.
